In most Otavalo communities women and girls wear bead necklaces. Beads are more commonly made from gold, gilded glass, coral, painted clay, and tagua (a nut) to name a few.
Otavalo, located aprox. 90 minutes north of Quito, is a tourist shoppers delight. The market operates daily, with the Saturday market being the busiest (followed by Wednesday) offers a wide range of artisan products, from wool and alpaca sweaters & wall hangings, wood carvings, jewelry, ceramics to name a few.
